Abner’s Authentic BBQ in Jenkintown, PA in my honest opinion, is an appropriate name for this establishment. I’ve eaten BBQ in other parts of the country, and I’d put this place in the the Pepsi challenge against any of them. Ribs are slow smoked for hours in their “smoke lockers” located in plain view behind the counter. The setup is simple, a counter, a fixins table, and tables to sit and eat at. No table service at this spot and it doesn’t detract from it one bit. If you’re lucky, you’ll be in the store when they open up the smoke lockers
to get a whiff of their authenticity.
Prices may at first seem steep for the type of food but you’ll quickly understand why the price structure was determined in this manner. They use full pork spare ribs which are larger than your typical rib. No baby-backs here. They also serve all of their ribs dry, as in without sauce. Unless you’re in the know, this may seem odd to you at first but once you taste what Abner’s has to offer, you’ll be a convert. IMHO, their ribs require no sauce. Sauce is supposed to enhance, not cover up. Abner’s does offer a range of sauces ranging from sweet (mild sauce) to spicy (hot sauce). Don’t forget about the sides; they’re every bit as tasty as the main entrees. Other tasty offerings include brisket and pulled pork which are either served on sandwiches or platters. Whatever you order is a sure-fire hit.
